David Bowie promo display

What you see here is a unique promotional perspex display for David Bowie‘s 1984 album Tonight. Supposedly made in and/or used for the German market. The front artwork is generated through five layers of which three are inside. Each layer contains a portion of the artwork, creating a very nice 3D effect when looking at it from the front or at an angle.

The display measures approx 12″ x 12″ x 3″/33 x 33 x 8.5cm and has quite some weight to it.

It’s a rare piece of memorabilia that you don’t see for sale too often. I happened to stumble upon it in a second hand record shop in Hamburg, Germany, in August 2016. The owner was initially reluctant to sell it, but I gave him an offer plus my telephone number nevertheless. Three days later I got a call and could pick it up for the price I offered him! Happy days.

And although it looks great, it is a pity that it was made for a not-so-great album… Though Loving The Alien, its opening track and final single from the album, remains one of my favorite songs from his 80s era.
